Notes for General Francis Lucas Simpson
He (Francis L. Simpson) was a leader in the fight to secure a railroad from
Greensboro to Danville to connect the North Carolina Railroad between Charlotte
and Greensboro with the Richmond and Danville Railroad. In the legislature of 1858-59 he
introduced in the House of Commons a bill to charter the Greensboro &
Danville Railroad Company. Because of bitter opposition from the eastern part
of the state, the bill was defeated.
Not until February 1862 was approval given when the Piedmont Railroad Company
was chartered and the capital stock set at $1,500,000.00. Along with many other
places throughout the state, books for subscriptions to stock were opened at
High Rock by Francis L. Simpson, Dr. R. SCALES and George W. GARRETT.
