More Notes on Elizabeth and William Hunter

Contributed by Frank Anderson Chappell

Here is part of what Emma Anderson recorded in 1932:

"In September 1826 William Hunter and Elizabeth White his wife and four children immigrated from England and settled at Mount Carmel, Abeville District, S.C. Their oldest son James was born August 28, 1819 in England. His other children Elizabeth, James [I assume she meant William- FAC] and Marguerite were also born in England. James Hunter moved to Alabama in 1842 and in 1843 was united in marriage to Lucinda Caroline Branscomb. They had three sons and two daughters...."

"The parents of James Hunter were William Hunter & Elizabeth White Hunter. They were born and reared in Great Britton, were married in 1817, had four children, James, William, Elizabeth, and Lucy. In about 1825 they immighrated from England to South Carolina, bringing their four children with them. Soon after taking up residence in this country, the parents, William Hunter and wife Elizabeth both died with typhoid fever...."

The above two portions, which appear in different parts of her account, are not exactly the same. Her account says all four children of William and Elizabeth Hunter were born in England, but also says they came to South Carolina in 1825 or 1826. If the youngest child, Elizabeth, was born in 1827, as indicated by other records, then she would have been born in America. James Hunter, Emma's father died when she was two years old, so she would not remember him. However she lived in the same house with her mother until Lucinda died in 1913 and would have heard first hand from her mother what Lucinda told her about the parents and siblings of her father.

Another account I have came from Dewitt Counts whose grandmother was Johnnie Mae Hunter who was the grandaughter of Lucinda Caroline Hunter. I suspect his account was prepared by his grandmother, Johnnie Mae Hunter Kearfoot. Johnnie Mae, though not born in Union Springs, spent much of her growing up years there in the presence of her grandmother, Lucinda Caroline Hunter. Her account, then, could also have come from firsthand accounts from her grandmother. Excerpts from Dewitt Counts account are as follows:

"William Hunter and Elizabeth White were married in Dublin, Ireland June 3, 1815 where their first child James was born August 28, 1819. They came to America in 1820 and settled in Abbeville District, South Carolina..

   1. James Hunter was born in Dublin, Ireland August 28, 1819 was brought to South Carolina when 2 years old, died June 8, 1855..

   2. William Hunter was born February 25, 1823.

   3. Margarite Hunter was born April 21, 1825.

   4. Elizabeth Hunter was born July 11, 1827, died September 6, 1888.

Elizabeth White my loving and affectionate wife died in America June 7, 1829. Tradition furnished by Elizabeth Hunter Hayne is that William Hunter (the father) died a short time after the death of his wife (Elizabeth White Hunter). The four orphaned children were adopted by Christian friends.

   James Hunter immigrated to Alabama

William Hunter remained in South Carolina and died in young manhood

Margarite Hunter was taken by her foster parents to Ohio

Elizabeth Hunter was taken to Norcross, Georgia where she married a Mr. Hayne and reared a large family of children. (Hayne history page)

David William Haynie, born August 17, 1830 and Elizabeth Hunter, born July 11, 1827 were married November 7, 1848 in South Carolina
