[Most of the information on this website on the Marshall Hill family and
descendants was originally provided by Rhoda Fone]
Hi Marilyn. I'm very happy that Ralph copied me on his message to you and
that you have contacted me. It's been a long time since I've been in touch with
someone so closely connected to my Hill family. I descend from Margaret Ann
Hill, sister of your Frances "Fanny" Hill.
I do not have a marriage record for Frances "Fanny" Hill and Francis J.
Hall, but I do have proof that they were married before 13 Feb.
1854. There is a deed in Todd Co., KY of that date where Francis J. Hall and
Fannie H., his wife; and Mrs. Frances H. Hill, widow of Marshall Hill of Todd
Co. are selling 143-1/2 acres to William Watkins. The deed says in part:
". . . for $264.75 to Francis J. Hall and Fannie (Hill), his wife, for
their 1/7th interest; and $480 to Mrs. Frances H. Hill, widow of Marshall Hill,
dec'd, for her Dower interest . . ."
I think they were selling out in preparation for the move to Missouri.
Since this deed is dated in Feb. 1854, there would be plenty of time for Francis
& Fanny Hall to move to MO and have their oldest son born later that
year. I've thought that probably Fanny was the only one to be married in
Kentucky. The 1/7th interest confuses me as I know that Marshall Hill had 8
children. Many years ago I used a certified researcher who lives in Todd Co.
and according to her, Marshall Hill died without a will. She mentioned that
Marshall Hill's inventory dated Dec. 26, 1844, has a very long list of
livestock, farm implements, house-hold furnishings, grain, notes for collection,
and one year's provision for "the widow and her eight children." It might be
that one of the children died - I do not have complete info. on all of them.
Marshall Hill was son of John P. Hill and his first wife, Elizabeth
Marshall. John P. married three more times after Elizabeth's death and had
children by the next two wives but none by the fourth wife. Elizabeth Marshall
was daughter of Robert Marshall, Jr. and Mary Ann Simpson who moved from Fairfax
Co., VA to Fayette Co., KY in the 1790s. Naturally the Simpson connection is
the reason this Hill info. is on Ralph's great website.
Marshall Hill married 17 Sep 1828, Adair Co., KY, to Frances Haskins
Atkinson, daughter of Joshua Atkinson and his second wife, Frances Haskins. The
Atkinsons and Haskins moved from Chesterfield Co., VA to Green Co., Kentucky (in
the part that later became Adair Co,), in the 1790s.
