Written by Rhoda Fone
An indenture dated 17 March 1767 shows that Eli Cleveland and Mary his wife
". . . did grant lease set & to farm let unto John Biswell. . ." etc. ". . .
two thirds part of a tract of land belonging to Samuel
Canterbury late of County of Fairfax deceased who devised the same to Mary his
wife now the wife of Eli Cleveland. . ." This is found in
Fairfax Co., VA Deed Bk. G, pp. 132-135. (Sparacio)
Later on, Mary & Eli moved to Fayette Co., KY.
Fayette County, Kentucky Court Records, Vol. I, by Michael L. Cook
& Bettie A. Cummings Cook.
(Fayette Co., KY Record Bk. F, p. 602) Deed. Eli Cleveland and
Mary Cleveland, his wife, July 10, 1787, convey to
George Winn of Fairfax County, Virginia, 405 acres, part of
1,000 acres granted to Alexander Cleveland on preemption
warrant.
Alexander Cleveland was brother of Eli Cleveland.
Info. from Mrs. Edna Bushnell:"Robert Marshall purchased a tract of land containing 100 acres on Elk Lick
Branch of Kentucky River On October 19, 1787 from Eli Cleveland
and Mary his wife for the sum of 30 pounds, which tract was a part of
a tract of 1000 acres granted to Alexander Cleveland on
Preemption Warrant entry and by him conveyed to said Eli
Cleveland (Fayette Co., Ky Deed Book B, Page 8)."
Robert Marshall was married to Mary Ann Simpson, daughter of George Simpson
and Susannah Wheeler -- my line.
There is also another deed In Fayette Co. in 1805 - Eli Cleveland
and Mary Cleveland, his wife, to John Winn.
So it seems certain that Mary (Simpson) Canterbury Cleveland was alive
until at least 1805.
