Notes for RUTH SIMPSON:

As the first school secretary at Sarah R. Smith Elementary in Buckhead, Ruth Simpson Breithaupt kept the school's records in order and staff activities coordinated for 17  years.  Mrs. Breithaupt, 91, formerly of Norcross, died Wednesday at Springdale Health Care Center in Cartersville.  The funeral will be at R.T. Patterson Funeral Home, Norcross.  In the fall of 1954, Sarah R. Smith Elementary School opened its doors, and Mrs. Breithaupt was its first secretary.  "She was very organized and like to keep things running smoothly," said her daughter, Peggy B. Hudson of Marietta.  Before the Smith school opened, Mrs. Breithaupt worked as a secretary at nearby R.L. Hope Elementary School.  In the early 1950s, Buckhead was growing and enrollment at the Piedmont Road school was "really running over at the seams," making the construction of the Smith school a necessity, said her daughter.  A Norcross native, Mrs. Breithaupt received her teaching certification from Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville.  She worked as a substitute teacher before going to work as a secretary at the Hope school.  Although she retired in 1971, Mrs. Breithaupt kept in touch with many of the teachers and staff over the years and was active in school secretarial organizations.  A former resident of Marietta, she was a member of women's groups at John Knox Presbyterian Church..  Surviving in addition to her daughter are a son, Charles C. Breithaupt of Rabun Gap; four grandchildren; two step-grandchildren;and three great-grandchildren. (source: Atlanta Constitution - 1997)
