ORAL HISTORY HANDED DOWN FROM YOUNGBLOOD BRANCH OF FAMILY TREE


? White and ? Hunter came to America from Belfast, North Ireland

Daughter Elizabeth was three months old

They also had two older children - a son and another daughter

Upon arrival they were destitute and could not feed the children

They gave the two older children to families who could raise them

The son was given to a family from Alabama

The older daughter to a family from Indiana

They never saw these two children again

1. David Williamson Haynie, son of Stephen Pinckney Haynie Jr. and Nancy Williamson, was born on 17 Aug 1830 in Anderson County, South Carolina, died on 15 Jul 1894 in Norcross, Gwinnett County, Georgia at age 63, and was buried in Norcross Town Cemetery.


General Notes: Served in the 16th Georgia Regiment, H Company, during the Civil War. David W Haney. Claimed Residence in Gwinnett County. Enlist Date 11 August 1861. Private Enlisted H Co. 16th Infantry Regiment

Buried in Norcross Town Cemetery with his wife Elizabeth. Tombstone indicates service in CSA. James A. Cook and Margaret Haynie Cook and one of their sons is buried in the adjacent family site. The second wife of James A. Cook, Rosanna Elizabeth Haynie, is also buried nearby as well as Eliza Haynie Bolton and family.

General Notes: Elizabeth Hunter Haynie was born in Ireland and immigrated to America. She most likely met her husband, David Haynie, in South Carolina and married there since two of their children were born in South Carolina. Many of their children, starting with Margaret, were born in Georgia.

Eliza married Benjamin Bradford Bolton, son of Joseph Bolton and Priscilla South, on 11 Jul 1867 in Georgia. Benjamin was born in 1847 in Georgia and died before 1910 in Gwinnett County, Georgia.

5. Margaret Ann Haynie (David Williamson 1) was born on 6 Oct 1854 in Georgia, died on 18 Aug 1890 in Norcross, Gwinnett County, Georgia at age 35, and was buried in Norcross Tow n Cemetery.


General Notes: Margaret's death was most likely due to complications delivering her last son, David A., born August 7, 1890. She died on August 18, 1890. The young son died shortly thereafter on September 20. The 1880 census states that Margaret is 25 which would have her being born between 1854-1855. Her grave marker gives her birth date as October 6, 1854. Margaret's grandparents William and Elizabeth Hunter arrived from Ireland aboard the sloop "William" in Charlestown, South Carolina in 1828 with their two sons, William and James, and two daughters, Mary and Elizabeth . Margaret's mother, Elizabeth, was born in July 1827 therefore she was approximately one year old when her family arrived in Charlestown.

Margaret married James Anderson Cook, son of Jesse Cook and Penelope Coneway, on 16 Jan 1873 in Gwinnett County, Georgia. James was born on 24 May 1852 in Chattooga County, Georgia, died on 27 Sep 1914 in Duluth, Gwinnett County, Georgia at age 62, and was buried in Norcross Town Cemetery.


General Notes: 1. James Anderson Cook married Margaret Hunter January 16, 1873 in Georgia. He was a blacksmith in the Pinckneyville area of Gwinnett County during the period of 1874 to 1900+.

2. In the census of 1880 (Volume 11, E.D. 118, Sheet 3, Line 11) James Anderson and Margaret Cook are living in the Pinckneyville District of Gwinnett County Georgia with the following children:  son, John R., age 6; son, E (Edward), age 4; son James Howell, age 2; and daughter, J. (Jane) Annie, age 7 months. They also had a hired hand living with them. It is Interesting that James A. Cook's siblings were named John, Edward and Anne, the same as his first two sons and first daughter.

3. In the census of 1900 James A. is reported to own his own house without any mortgage. Margaret bore him nine children before dying due, most likely, to complications with giving birth to her last child (died 11 days after the birth). In this census four of his children by his first marriage, Walter (18), Riley (16), Ida(13) and Ruth (11) are still living at home as well as four children of his marriage with Anna, Maggie (7), Mattie (5), Esther (3), and Ellen (8 months).

After his first wife Margaret died, James married her sister Sarah Rosanna Elizabeth (Anna) on December 21, 1890. To my knowledge Anna bore him four children, all girls. Margaret and Anna Haynie's father was born in South Carolina, their mother Elizabeth Hunter Haynie was born in Ireland.

James Anderson Cook and Margaret Cook along with their son David and their son Walter Franklin Cook, his wife (Tallulah Morgan Cook) and young son (James Riley) are buried in the Norcross town cemetery. Adjacent to their grave sites are Margaret's parents, David W. Haynie and Elizabeth Hunter Haynie in a Haynie family plot. Also buried in an adjacent plot is Rosanna Haynie Cook, James Anderson Cook's second wife, and one of James and Rosanna's daughters Ellen Palmyra Cook. Continuing down from that plot in the next adjacent plot is a third sister, Eliza Haynie Bolton, one of her daughters and three graves with rock markers without identification. James Anderson Cook owned and operated a blacksmith shop in Norcross from the mid 1870s to sometime before 1910.  In the 1910 census he and his family had moved to Duluth where he owned another blacksmith shop. Several of his sons joined him in the blacksmith business. I am told that James Anderson's blacksmith and wagon shop in Duluth had a sign saying "James A. Cook and Sons."  At least two of his sons, James Howell and Walter Franklin joined him in the blacksmith business on a permanent basis. James Howell continued the blacksmith business in Duluth after his father died. Walter Franklin Cook died at age 29 in 1911.

Cook, resident of said county, departed this life on the 27th day of September, 1914, leaving your petitioners as his next of kin, and also leaving a large estate of real and personal property, worth the sum of Twelve Hundred Dollars, and at the time of his death the said J. A. Norcross, Ga., September 29.--(Special.)--The remains of James A. Cook, who died at his home in Duluth Monday afternoon, were brought to Norcross and interred with Masonic honors. He was also a prominent Odd Fellow. Mr. Cook is survived by his wife, five daughters and two sons.

Lived on Barton Street in Norcross. Anna Cook moved in with her daughter Mattie after Anna's youngest daughter Ellen died in 1929.

This census record says that Anna originally married at 18. She was married to a Mr. Lamar and they had one daughter, C. Lamar (See 1880 census where Rosanna and her daughter are living in the household of her parents, David and Elizabeth Haynie in Pinckneyville District (Norcross) in Gwinnett County, Georgia).

Cora married Hilliard Rawlins, son of William Jack Rawlins and Frances Clementine Donaldson, in 1900 in Gwinnett County, Georgia. Hilliard was born on 5 Jan 1880 in Gwinnett County, Georgia and died on 12 Sep 1909 in Snellville, Gwinnett County, Georgia at age 29.

Atlanta Constitution   Monday, September 13, 1909

Hilliard L. Rawlins, aged 28, died yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the residence, 87 Powell Street. He was a groceryman and kept a store on Decatur Street. He was a member of Fulton lodge of Odd Fellows.   He is survived by his wife and three children. The funeral arrangements will be announced later.

Hilliard L. Rawlins, aged 38, died at a private sanatorium Sunday night. The body will be sent to Gloster, Ga., today for funeral and interment.


Sarah next married James Anderson Cook, son of Jesse Cook and Penelope Coneway, on 21 Dec 1890 in Norcross, Gwinnett County, Georgia. James was born on 24 May 1852 in Chattooga County, Georgia, died on 27 Sep 1914 in Duluth, Gwinnett County, Georgia at age 62, and was buried in Norcross Town Cemetery.


General Notes: 1. James Anderson Cook married Margaret Hunter January 16, 1873 in Georgia. He was a blacksmith in the Pinckneyville area of Gwinnett County during the period of 1874 to 1900+.

2. In the census of 1880 (Volume 11, E.D. 118, Sheet 3, Line 11) James Anderson and Margaret Cook are living in the Pinckneyville District of Gwinnett County Georgia with the following children:  son, John R., age 6; son, E (Edward), age 4; son James Howell, age 2; and daughter, J. (Jane) Annie, age 7 months. They also had a hired hand living with them. It is Interesting that James A. Cook's siblings were named John, Edward and Anne, the same as his first two sons and first daughter.

3. In the census of 1900 James A. is reported to own his own house without any mortgage. Margaret bore him nine children before dying due, most likely, to complications with giving birth to her last child (died 11 days after the birth). In this census four of his children by his first marriage, Walter (18), Riley (16), Ida(13) and Ruth (11) are still living at home as well as four children of his marriage with Anna, Maggie (7), Mattie (5), Esther (3), and Ellen (8 months).

After his first wife Margaret died, James married her sister Sarah Rosanna Elizabeth (Anna) on December 21, 1890. To my knowledge Anna bore him four children, all girls. Margaret and Anna Haynie's father was born in South Carolina, their mother Elizabeth Hunter Haynie was born in Ireland. James Anderson Cook and Margaret Cook along with their son David and their son Walter Franklin Cook, his wife (Tallulah Morgan Cook) and young son (James Riley) are buried in the Norcross town cemetery. Adjacent to their grave sites are Margaret's parents, David W. Haynie and Elizabeth Hunter Haynie in a Haynie family plot. Also buried in an adjacent plot is Rosanna Haynie Cook, James Anderson Cook's second wife, and one of James and Rosanna's daughters Ellen Palmyra Cook. Continuing down from that plot in the next adjacent plot is a third sister, Eliza Haynie Bolton, one of her daughters and three graves with rock markers without identification.


James Anderson Cook owned and operated a blacksmith shop in Norcross from the mid 1870s to sometime before 1910.  In the 1910 census he and his family had moved to Duluth where he owned another blacksmith shop. Several of his sons joined him in the blacksmith business. I am told that James Anderson's blacksmith and wagon shop in Duluth had a sign saying "James A. Cook and Sons."   At least two of his sons, James Howell and Walter Franklin joined him in the blacksmith business on a permanent basis. James Howell continued the blacksmith business in Duluth after his father died. Walter Franklin Cook died at age 29 in 1911.

2. The record of John R Cook's marriage was obtained from the Gwinnett County Probate Court. He and Effie May Allen were issued a marriage license on June 6 and married on June 10, 1906 by Reverend Wiley W. Owens, the same minister that married his brother Edward and Annie Hurt in 1903.

General Notes:    James Howell Cook joined his father in the blacksmith business. He owned a blacksmith shop in Duluth all of his adult life. The shop was near the Methodist Church right off main street in Duluth. Several of his sons helped out in the shop in their teenage years but none stayed in the business after graduating from high school. He and his family were members of Duluth Methodist Church and were faithful attendees. In 1910 the James H. Cook family lived in a house near James Anderson Cook. James Anderson Cook lived up on a hill with James Howell on one side of him and the Charles Gresham family on the other side. James Howell's half-sister Margaret married one of the Gresham boys, Carl and his brother William Riley married Myrtle Lena Gresham.


It was my misfortune to be born many years after my grandfather died therefore I never knew him, but I do have fond memories of my grandmother Cook.


It is interesting to me that my grandfather James Howell and his sister Jane Annie applied for their marriage licenses on the same day, December 5, 1899 and they were married in a double wedding ceremony performed by the Reverend J. W. Haney on December 24, 1899. This indicates to me that they must have had a very close relationship. Jane married William Castleberry Coker and they named one of their sons Howell after her brother and another Anderson after her father.

William C. "Berry" Coker was the section foreman in the 'teens.' (1912/1916)  A native of Campton, in Walton County, He was married to Jane Anna Cook, and they had four children, three of them sons who survived to adulthood (Henry A., William H. and James C.). Anna Cook Coker's sister, Maggie, married Carl Greshams, son of the photographer who took the 1900 picture of the Loganville train. Berry Coker worked for Seaboard for a relatively short time. He was primarily a farmer after leaving the railroad.

She was returned to Duluth to be buried at the side of her husband.


I remember Aunt Esther from a family reunion in Duluth at Frank and Myrtie Mattison's house in the 1950's. She kept hugging me and saying, "So you're Howell's boy."

General Notes: Myrtie Cook joined the Duluth Methodist Church in 1913 at age 8. Aunt Myrtie was a very dear person to me.  She and Uncle Frank had a very profound influence on my life. They set a high standard for me to emulate. She and I talked for many hours over the last 30 months of her life about the Cook family and some of her experiences. Without her knowledge of the family I would not have been able to find out very much about my ancestors. Aunt Myrtie and Uncle Frank were a bastion of safety and security for many in the family. Three of her siblings lived with them in the latter stages of their lives, Irene, Russell, and my father, James Howell Cook. Grandmother Cook lived with them for approximately thirty years until she died in 1970.

Aunt Myrtie taught school for 1 1/2 years after she finished high school. She then was employed by the Biltmore Hotel in Atlanta as an office worker. She and Thelma Franklin rode the train to Atlanta on Monday mornings and returned to Duluth on Friday night by train. The hotel provided rooms for the employees. Once after she and Uncle Frank were engaged, he went to Atlanta to pick her up on Friday afternoon at the Biltmore. There was a ferocious thunderstorm that afternoon and the rain continued most of the evening. Aunt Myrtie said that they pulled down the curtains on the sides of the car, but the rain was so heavy that Uncle Frank could only see the ruts in the dirt road. He told Aunt Myrtie that they didn't have to worry about getting off the road because the ruts were so deep that the car would steer itself. It took them several hours to go the thirty or so miles because of the rain.


Uncle Frank and Aunt Myrtie lived on Buford highway for about eight years after they were married. Then they built their house on Abbott's Bridge Road and lived there the rest of their lives. They moved into their new house before the well was in.  Uncle Frank finished the well. It had a lot of water, but the water was filled with minerals and was undrinkable. They had to drill a second well in order to have drinking water.


Uncle Hal Hudson's brother John told Aunt Myrtie that she was a Rhapsody in Blue at their 50th wedding anniversary. The party was held at the Norcross Methodist Church Fellowship Hall and Gail and I attended. Duluth Methodist Church did not have a facility large enough for the party.

Uncle Frank was one of my role models. He was always a strong man, yet tender-hearted and would help anybody in need. I remember spending one summer with he and Aunt Myrtie. Shirley and I would go with Uncle Frank to replace the street lights in Duluth. He always came home for dinner at noon and that was their big meal of the day. Shirley and I helped Uncle Frank dig ditches under the house and put in indoor bathroom that summer.


Uncle Frank worked at the Lowe & Pittard's General store on Main Street in Duluth from the time he married till it closed when he was retirement age. He also was an agent for Atlanta Gas and Georgia Power for the Duluth community. After retirement Uncle Frank continued to work for another ten years or so.


Uncle Frank always attended the Duluth Baptist Church and Aunt Myrtie the Duluth Methodist Church. He was very active in the church and held many positions of authority as well as being a deacon. He truly was one of the stalwarts of the town of Duluth.

Louise separated from Howell in 1945-46 and they were divorced in 1948. Louise married Joe L. Jackson on May 19, 1951 in Reno, Washoe County, Nevada. They moved to Denver Colorado and then returned to Atlanta, Georgia in the fall of 1952. They remained in the Atlanta and Clarkston area until their deaths. Louise was buried on January 29, 1977 in Melwood Cemetery, section 2, Clarkston, DeKalb County, Georgia.

She was called Mama Louise by all her grandchildren.

Funeral for Mrs. Louise Jackson, 66, of 1092 Jolly Avenue, Clarkston, was held Friday, January 29, 1977 at Turner's Chapel in Decatur, with burial in Melwood Cemetery. The Rev. Steve Graham officiated.

Mrs. Jackson, a member of Peachtree Christian Church, died Wednesday, January 26, 1977.

Frank Mattison, Jr., 72 of Duluth died November 27, 2000. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Thursday, November 30, 2000 at the Duluth First United Methodist Church with Rev. Coy Hinton and Rev. Tamlyn Collins officiating. Burial will be in the Duluth Cemetery in the New Family Site. Mr. Mattison was a native of Duluth, a member of Duluth First United Methodist Church he graduated from Duluth High School in 1945 and attended Georgia State University, he served in the Korean Conflict in the U.S. Army, 14th Infantry and received the Bronze Star. He was a retired insurance Broker after 48 years of service and was past President of the Duluth Lions Club. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Myrtie Mattison. Survivors include wife of 48 years, Cora Ann New Mattison, Duluth; daughter and sons-in-law, Debbie and Bill Ellis, Buford, son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Barbara Mattison, Suwanee, and son David Mattison, Duluth; grandchildren, Stephen Ellis, Christopher Ellis, Michelle Ellis, Victoria Mattison, Rachael Mattison, brother and sister-in-law, Shirley and Faye Mattison, Duluth; several nieces and nephews. General Notes:      My sister was called Patsy when she was a child and later Pat. She was a caring and loving mother for her four daughters. All the children of her Belvedere neighborhood in DeKalb County loved her. I recall a story that exemplified her relationship with the neighbor children. One of the small children came to her house to see if one of Pat's daughters could come out and play. The daughter was not at home, so the little girl asked if Miss Pat could come out and play with her.


Pat was very committed to her larger family. She and Tom always had all of the immediate Cook family at her house to celebrate Christmas. Every Christmas was made special during my late teen years, through college and the fourteen years after Gail and I moved back to Tucker from Baltimore Maryland by these occasions.


Pat was a faithful member of the Peachcrest Christian Church in DeKalb County. She attended regularly, taught children's church school and was a participant in all facets of the life of the church. Her faith in Jesus Christ was a constant in her life.


I was very close to my sister, Pat. When I was a sophomore at Georgia Tech she was pregnant with her fourth child, Sandy. When the time came to deliver the baby on a bitter day in January, she called me to take her to the hospital since their car had a broken window. She named her last daughter Sandy (Sandra Gail) after my future wife Gail. Pat's death at age 47 was one of the tragic occurrences in my life.


Pat's last year was a time of great sickness with cancer. She was given radiation and chemotherapy treatments, but the cancer would not be defeated. She was operated on for the cancer but this also was to no avail. Her last months were a time of considerable pain. Nevertheless, Pat never lost hope for her recovery nor let the pain cause her to lose hope in her Lord.


Patricia Louise Cook Plunkett is buried at the Fairview Memorial Gardens Cemetery on Fairview Road in Stockbridge, Henry County, Georgia. Her husband Thomas Emory Plunkett is buried at her side. This cemetery is located in Land Lot 196 of the 12th district of Henry County, Stockbridge, Georgia. Interstate675S to Exit 3. East on Ellenwood/Panola Drive. Left on East Atlanta Rd. General Notes:    James Howell Cook, Jr (Jim) attended a number of grammar schools and at least four high schools. He started grammar school in Jacksonville, Florida, attended grammar school in various locales in Georgia and South Carolina. He graduated from J. C. Murphy high school in Atlanta, Georgia in June of 1955. He worked for Baker Pools, a construction company for approximately six years during the time he was attending the Georgia Institute of Technology. Jim graduated from Georgia Tech with a bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering in December, 1960.


Jim and Gail met at the Wesley foundation on the Georgia Tech campus in the fall of 1956 and dated for over three years prior to their marriage. They were married in Atlanta, Georgia on March 26, 1960 at the Virginia Baptist Church by the Reverend Omer Jones. After the birth of their first child, Pamela, Jim and Gail moved to Towson, Maryland where he was employed by the Bendix Corporation as an electrical engineer in the Antenna Research & Development department of Bendix Communications. During their stay in Towson Maryland their second daughter, Sheri, was born August 2, 1962. Jim remained in the employ of Bendix until May of 1964 when he took a job in Atlanta, Georgia with Scientific-Atlanta, Inc. His career at Scientific-Atlanta has been a long and productive one; he was promoted within the engineering ranks, then moved into management as a business manager, then a division manager, and in December of 1977 he was elected a Principal Engineer by the Scientific-Atlanta Board of Directors, the highest engineering position in the company. He retired April 30, 2000 from Scientific-Atlanta after 36 years of employment with them. He is employed by a number of companies as a consultant at the present time.


Jim attended graduate school at Georgia Tech during the years of 1967 to 1970, graduating with a Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering with a specialty in Electromagetics. He is coauthor of six books on antenna design and communication systems and has published over 50 articles in technical and trade journals. He holds three patents on automatic tracking concepts and antenna measurement systems. He served as chair of the FCC Antenna Subcommittee on Reduced Orbital Spacing for Geo-synchronous Satellites.


He is very active in the life of First United Methodist Church in Tucker, Georgia. He has served in many elected positions in the church including Lay Leader, Chairman of the Board of Stewards, and presently serves as Lay Delegate to the North Georgia Annual Conference. He has taught the COMET Sunday school class for 30 years and has led the Disciple Bible and Christian Believer studies for the past 11 years.

Pastoral Prayer

Holy God of Compassion and Mercy. No one in this room understands the pain, hurt, confusion and even anger at the loss of Pam like you do. Your understanding and your unchanging love is needed so much more in these hours and weeks to come. Because God, because we humans don't understand fully the mysteries of death and suffering, we need your strength in such deep and particular ways. These tears and broken hearts will need your constant care and love. You are hurting with us this morning. Lord, you know how much this precious family is missing Pam, and struggling with her death coming at such a young age and under such difficult conditions. You understand the questions of why, even the questions of why such a loss would come when you are an all powerful God. Thank you God that you are big enough and caring enough to receive the feelings and questions that are so deep that words are inadequate. Today Holy God as grief moves in each heart, thank you for human families, for the community of faith that offers support and compassion. Thank you God for Pam's life, for her family, for her contributions to society and for her heart and spirit that loved so very deeply. Help us to find strength even though her death is so difficult. Help us to honor her life by remembering her, who she loves, how she lived her life on this earth and how we are affected by her. More than anything God, please help us claim the promise of resurrection, for our eternal life is ultimately with you. While we are here, we need you and we need each other. Thank you for the all the support and expressions of love extended to this family. We offer these prayers as we pray together the prayer of Jesus who understands the sorrows and who can bring the hope and healing- saying together,

Eulogy for Pamela Leigh Cook Heaton

Born March 10, 1961 Died          November 5, 2002


This is such a hard day for you; Jimmy, and Michael, Gail and Jim, Sheri and Michelle and your family- please know how much you are loved and all the people that are here today, are here because of that love. We all know that the pain of losing Pam is so great. So many conversations of love and support are offered to sustain, but in those moments when the emptiness is so deep it is important to have a place and to share together the process of grieving and of celebrating a life that touches so many people

When we go through our everyday lives, life can seem fairly predictable and then something happens. Such a tragedy reminds us that loving each other and living the best way we can is very important.


Celebrating Pam's life is an easier thing to do; saying good bye to her is something else altogether different. She was a wonderful person as you will hear over and over today,


Pam's life is one that blessed many people. I want to tell you a little about her from what her family has told me. She was a wonderful little girl, a sweet baby, born at Georgia Baptist Hospital on March 10, 1961. Pam attended Brockett Elementary and Tucker High School, she graduated with the class of 1979. She attended Georgia Southern for 3 years and finished her degree work at Georgia State. Pam was smart, very smart, she was a member of Gamma Beta Phi Math Honor Society and would later become her father's greatest resource for computer and technical questions. Pam was a wonderful manager and employee as you will soon hear when Angie speaks on behalf of her co-workers at Microsoft Business Solutions.


When Pam as a child of God grew up here at Tucker UMC. She was baptized and married here and today will be remembered here in this service of death and resurrection. When Pam was younger she was active in the choir and in the first bell choir here in the church, she deeply loved music. Gail told me that her piano teacher would unknowingly annoy Pam when she would call her Pam-el-a, Pam would just grit her teeth when she did that, but how she loved the piano and music.


 At Georgia Southern Pam was in the musical group Gateway. As  the oldest of the three girls, Jim reminded me that Pam told him not to lighten up on the rules for Michelle. Pam did not want her and Sherry to miss out on the rules. But when  Sherry and Pam were little, Jim and Gail moved into a house on Shady Lane, it was a new place and kind of scary to little sister Sherry so they had to move the beds for the girls so that Sherry was up against the wall and Pam was right next to her so she could protect her. Pam was their champion, she could instigate with the best of them.


 When Pam and Jimmy met, he told me that he knew immediately that she would someone special in his life. He was right, Jimmy like the number 3; 3 months after he met her he proposed to her on Valentine's Day; for 3 years they were engaged and were married 18 years this past September 18.


Michael is their pride and joy, coming into the world on June 2, 1989. Michael is very close to his mom, She loved to cook with him. She was a wonderful cook. They made cookies together. He loved to introduce her to things he was interested in. Michael introduced her to Christian radio, the FISH 104.7 and he played some of her music and therefore his music too, when I was with them on Tuesday. Mercy Me a singer they both liked very much. How special to share that kind of bond.


Pam loved her family as a child and when she was grown, so very much and she loved the family that Jimmy gave her, too with Cathy her sister-in- law and Mark her brother-in-law. When Pam and Jimmy got married, they came back to her parents' house to share pizza with everyone when all the wedding festivities were ended. And how Pam loved children and worked in the nursery as a volunteer in the church as well.


She liked to be behind the scenes but was in charge in other kinds of ways, she had her own opinions and would certainly disagree with you. Jim and Gail told me once when Pam was younger she had her wisdom out and the nurse did not respond to Pam's request for something and Pam just let her know that she wanted no more shots and that was that.


As Pam grew in her expertise with computers she helped Jim and Gail learn, too. One of the technologies is Instant Messenger and in the mornings, Pam would get on her computer and Jim got on his and she would write- "are you there, Daddy? They would chat awhile and stay connected.


When you see the gifts of Pam's life most of them are because of love, deep and strong. Today as we remember her life, the gifts she leaves Michael and Jimmy, her parents and family, her friends and co-workers are special- Music-we can all be deepened and blessed by the gift of music in the world. Loyalty, be there for people, do what you say you will do with integrity, stand by someone when they are hurting and celebrate with them when they are successful, Friendship- take time to nurture it and be thankful for it. Family- the gift that says we put them at the top of priority list, caring for others and taking care of them. Compassion- as you can see today it is here in abundance and will be in the days to come. Hope. Pam knew that even when things looked bleakest you should have hope. That's very important to us today as we remember her life. The last gift they named was Patience- How deeply we need that in our lives. Learning to wait for that which we cannot see, or understand certainly tests our patience. But for Pam and for our sake's on this earth, we do well to celebrate these gifts and to love and honor her even amidst the deep sadness and loss that unavoidable when someone dies unexpectedly in our lives. Faith is something else we are given as a gift and that is very important in these days to come.


When I was at Pam's house on Tuesday, I remember this feeling of almost robotic reactions, filling a glass of water, fixing a bite of lunch, answering the phones, we were all standing there hugging and crying and stumbling through those raw, numb feelings of shock and disbelief- as I stood at the kitchen sink there was this little plaque staring at me, and it read- Jesus is Lord. I whispered to myself, thank God that he is and I prayed please Lord Jesus, help this precious family. Faith does matter to us to make it through.


Your love for her and for the people who love her will help make the world different and better. As I close this part of my remarks, I want to leave you with these words from Philippians, the letter of Paul, that is a letter to remind the church about the eternal nature of joy amidst suffering, and coping amidst very trying circumstances. Since Jesus knew all about that, and since Pam was the kind of person who wanted hope and joy to be part of our everyday lives, I could imagine her even saying this to us this morning. I hope these words of will bring you some comfort and encouragement.


 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again. Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable- if anything is excellent or praiseworthy- think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me, put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you. IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER, AND OF THE SON, AND OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. AMEN.

She attended the Georgia Institute of Technology for two years, then transferred to Georgia State University where she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics graduated Magna Cum Laude in March of 1985. She and her mother graduated together.


She married James Courtney Knight of Savannah, Georgia, an electrical engineering graduate of Georgia Tech, on June 15, 1985. They lived in Charlotte, North Carolina until 1995 when they moved to Atlanta. Sheri worked for First Union Bank for two years then went to work for IBM where she remained until she moved to Atlanta. James worked for IBM for most of their years in Charlotte. They had two children while living in Charlotte, Jason and Jennifer.


Sheri and James were divorced in 1997. Sheri presently owns her own consulting company, Advanced Information Strategies, and works as a Data Base System Designer.


Sheri married James Courtney Knight, son of Stuart Grady Knight and Constance Lois "Connie" Chastain, on 15 Jun 1985 in Tucker, DeKalb County, Georgia. The marriage ended in divorce. James was born on 3 Feb 1961 in Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia.

General Notes:      Michelle attended Midvale grammar school and Tucker High School in Tucker, DeKalb County, Georgia. She entered Georgia Institute of Technology in  the fall of 1986 and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Mathematics with Highest Honors in March of 1990.


Michelle met David Wurst her freshman year at Georgia Tech and they dated until they were married June of 1990.  Michelle worked for Energy Management in Atlanta as a computer analyst until she returned to college in the fall of 1991. David graduated from Georgia Tech with a bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering in June 1991 in the Co-op program. He had co-opted at Georgia Power Company and accepted a permanent job with them upon graduation. They lived in Snellville, Georgia while he worked in Atlanta. Michelle returned to college in September of 1991 at Georgia State University to earn her teaching credentials. Upon graduation in June of 1992 she was employed as a high school mathematics teacher in Duluth, Georgia.


David and Michelle were transferred to Macon, Georgia in 1993 where she taught at Mary Persons High School in Forsyth, Georgia. She gave birth to triplets on July 20, 1995, Jonathan, Jessica, and Kathryn. David was transferred back to Atlanta in 1997. They lived in Lawrenceville, Gwinnett County, Georgia until October 2003. David was promoted and transferred by Georgia Power to Valdosta, Lowndes County, Georgia in August 2003 where they presently live (July 2004).


Michelle married David Carl Wurst, son of James Edward Wurst and Gloria Nadine McLendon, on 16 Jun 1990 in Tucker, DeKalb, Georgia. David was born on 25 Apr 1968 in Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia.


General Notes: David Wurst graduated from Lakeside High School in DeKalb County Georgia. He attended Georgia Institute of Technology and graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering.
