Petition for a Law Library in Napa California


Signed by 12 lawyers, including Finis Ewing Johnston and his two sons, Leslie Ewing Johnston and Harry Lewis Johnston. The judge who signed off on the petition was Henry C. Gesford, brother of Lillie E. Gesford Johnston, Finis' sister-in-law. The typewritten text in the document below has faded but the signatures are distinct. Here is a transcription of the document:

TO THE HONORABLE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF NAPA COUNTY:
      The undersigned workers of the bar of Napa County respectfully petition your honorable body to provide by Ordinance for the application to Napa County of the provisions of the Act of March 31st, 1891, relative to the establishment of law libraries.

      If a library be established, we will contribute toward its maintenance $1.00 for each proceeding or action filed by us in the clerk’s office.
