Colonel Joseph Simpson Garrett

Email from MJ Stephens:

I found your website and can fill in some information that you seem to be missing on Joseph Simpson Garrett -- son of Harriett Simpson Garrett of Social Circle Georgia.

He was born March 9, 1831 in North Carolina and died December 19, 1923 in Midland, Georgia.

Your website is correct that he was a Colonel in the Confederate Army and then after the war, he opened Garrett & Sons in Columbus which was a Tobacco, Whiskey, and grocery wholesale shop and was regarded as the first of its kind in Columbus. He also owned Garrett-Williams Distillery in Baltimore, MD.

He was appointed to Postmaster of Columbus from 1897-1905 by President William McKinley.

He built the house that I currently own in 1881 and lived there until 1910 when he moved his family to their plantation farm house in Midland, Georgia.

Two of this Grandsons are currently living as his middle child didn't have children until his mid 60's -- Robert in Ohio (who in his 80's visited us last year) and George Jr. in Hilton Head, SC.

Hope this helps!

Sincerely,

MJ Stephens
